“What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”   The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”  “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

~ Luke 10: 26-7

I awakened from a dream in which I was at a KC Cougars baseball game and a woman was judging others in the name of Christianity. After some strange shenanigans (yep, it was a dream alright!), I had a chance to explain that I could sum up my faith with “Love God with all your heart. Love your neighbor as yourself.”  And “judge not lest you shall be judged.”

(When I typed the sentence above, instead of ‘chance’, I typed ‘change’.  I find myself caught up in realizing the  similarity of these words…  and their relationship.  Hence, the title for this post.  And, yes, I’ve always been tangential!)

Now I have this song in my head. Not a bad earworm…

Will you pray with me, please?

Good morning Good God,
You amaze me. You fill my head with thoughts of you even as I sleep. You send synaptic communication. You are in every cell of my being. And of course, you are in every other cell and molecule of creation. You add a drop of yourself, your energy, your love. I adore you. I worship you.

Faithful Foundation, Gracious Grantor,
Many spring to mind, as I think of those ‘standing in the need of prayer’. My friend, Amy, who was so sick last spring is stricken with pneumonia. It’s so hard for her to avoid illness with that nasty lupus. Heal her, Lord, and send a cure for lupus! There are infants who have congenital issues and babies with little bodies that don’t serve them.  There are parents who need to know about Baby Safe Haven laws to avoid abandoning their infants unlawfully.  Make them all whole. There is evil to be overcome; I see it in selfishness of individuals and countries – greed fills the gaping holes people have that wouldn’t exist if they would allow themselves to be filled with your love. Be with Laura’s father as he struggles with lung cancer and the unfortunate side effects from testing agents. Imbue him with your strength and love, fill him with your energy of healing. Soften Steve and remove his anxiety over money. Fill him with hopeful energy. Remind him to relax when he’s not in control of circumstances and needs to be patient.

Give my friend, Melissa (with such a similar name) a wonderful 10th anniversary cruise – ensure she at least avoids pain with her ear/sinus infection, keep her safe and let her bask in the love of her husband.

Incredible Imagineer,

Thank you for Thea and her health. Thank you for Nancy to advocate for me in my battles — and succeeding when I would have given up. Thank you for the promise of plans for my welfare, not destruction. Thank you for bringing me and so many others through troubled times. Thank you for reminders to avoid pride, for only you are the potency; I am but the vessel to be filled with it (filled to overflowing, I might add!). Thank you for friends who show me your support and enfold me in love and peace. God, I love you so much!

In Jesus’ name,

To God be the glory!

This morning I found myself singing “For the beauty of the earth”:
For the beauty of the earth
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise
this our joyful hymn of praise.
For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale and tree and flow’r
Sun and Moon and stars of light
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child.
Friends on earth and friends above
For all gentle thoughts and mild.
For each perfect gift of Thine
To our race so freely given.
Graces human and divine
Flow’rs of earth and buds of heav’n.
For thy church that evermore
Lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Her pure sacrifice of love.
Pretty good, huh?
As I looked up the lyrics, I found that it is “a hymn for ordinary time”. While I’ve seen the phrase previously, I wondered what is meant by it so I looked it up.  It means not a specific season like Lent or Advent.  Most of our lives is spend in ordinary time, yet ordinary doesn’t begin to reflect what it means.
Always Almighty,
You are the source of the seasons and of ordinary time.  Yet, this creation of yours is far from ordinary.  Only you could have made so many places creatures and let them change and grow and flourish.  And that’s how you made us.  Amazing!
Everloving Energy,
I pray for Amy and I thank you for the improvements.  Your healing and your strength and your love are evident, especially in the outpouring of concern by all who know Amy. Amy is your true and faithful servant as are those who surround her with their love and prayers.
I bring Susan to you, put your hand on her back and make it feel better, please. She lives for you, Lord, to show your graciousness.  Whenever she cannot get out of the house, you lose an opportunity for others to see this.  That may sound manipulative, but I don’t mean it that way…  it’s merely fact.
I bring Linda and Mike to you.  They love Sandman, he is their own true dog.  Ease his pain and let them enjoy his golden days.
Thank you for Thea’s clean bill of health.  Keep the nasty cancer away and let her recuperate fully.
Serene Source,
Thank you for sunshine and sprouting seeds that I can later plant outside for food.  Thank you for days of leisure and days of work.  Thank you for the beauty of the earth.  Thank you for my life.  I love you so much!
In Jesus’ name, I pray,
To God be the glory!

As I think about Amy today and prepare to pray for her, I look for an email from Pam.  Our congregation’s Director of Connections, Pam Russell, makes sure to send prayer requests out at least weekly…  sometime several times a week.  In Amy’s case, we’ve sometimes gotten updates daily.

Serene Source,

You send the best people to the best possible jobs.  You create those with the hearts of servants.  With faithful commitment to you, they serve.  Amazing!

Lord of Light,

I pray for Amy’s health again today.  I pray you will continue to keep her moving along the way to recovering wellness.  I think of all who have been kind and helpful in this process:  Jill and Doug, who dropped everything and drove to Colorado to be with their daughter; Pam, who continues to send news and who cries along with those who suffer; Diane and Steve, who now live in Colorado and who have visited the hospital; Paula and Julie, who even with their own jobs and families have prayed, visited and comforted their parents and Amy.

But wait… in the time between when I started this and could finish it, Pam sent an update:

This is definitely a roller coaster ride for Amy and our family! Last evening was a restless night and ended up short of breath so the tube was put back in her mouth.  As you can imagine, it was a shock for us when we got to hospital this A.M.  She was pretty drowsy and we stayed till noon and then met Felts and had lunch with them in cafeteria.  So good to talk and visit with such good friends!  We went back up to ICU and Amy was standing up and being held by 2 physical therapists.  She did everything that they asked her to do.  I told them that she wanted to get out of the hospital!!  She is a fighter and we are proud of her.

This is the first time we brought her I-pad and she sat in chair and seemed very glad to have it back.  Since she can’t talk, she whispered to me that she would like pencil and paper.  Doug immediately handed both to her. She wrote questions to me and I answered them.  Then we looked at 16 cards and all the coloring Get Wells from your class, Elaine!  Thank you over and over for the cards and nice notes.  Can’t tell you how they have cheered me and I know Amy likes them so much.  Cora, our 12 year old granddaughter said “Grandma, does she know all these people?”  I told her that she sure does! Thanks to all of you.

For 2-1/2 hours she sat in the chair and she concentrated on above things. This is definitely progress.  So we left feeling much better than we arrived.  We pray that she has a good night and hopefully will get rid of tube tomorrow.

Thanks again for prayers, e-mails, cards and phone calls.  Melissa, Amy read your beautiful prayer on I-pad and then handed it over to her dad to read.  We had read it in motel coming here and reread it today.  Beautiful!

Blessings on all your heads!

Jill and Doug

Everpresent Energy,

Your love and blessings echo throughout the universe.  I see, hear and feel them in every thing.  I don’t know that I can ever fully express my gratitude.  Let me spend my days trying.  Thank you those who serve others.  Thank you for healing.  Thank you for lightening of our burdens. Thank you for our lives.

In Jesus’ name, I pray,

To God be the glory!

I’ve just read this:

Dear Family and Friends,

I have GOOD NEWS today!  How joyful I am to e-mail good news about Amy!  This is the first day in 19 days that Doug and I have not gone to the hospital.  Paula and Julie felt that we needed a rest and Paula took off from school and went for us.  She just called and said this is the best day in 3 weeks!  Amy does have strep throat and pneumonia but it is under control with antibiotics. The Ventilation tube is out and her voice is weak but she is sitting up in a chair and asking Paula questions!  She wanted to know where the People Magazines were, where are all the cards Mom always brings and Where are Mom and Dad?  They must be out in the hall! Also Asked for her Pepsi and Paula said that she couldn’t have it yet but she could put some on her lips.  Amy said that she would like that!  She knew that Julie had gone home to take care of her family.  She may be in ICU one more day.  The goal is to get her on 7th floor to rehab floor.

hands make hearts

We know that we have to be cautious about this turn around but the Lord is answering our prayers. Please all of you continue to pray for AMY JOY.  Thank you so much.

You are wrapping your arms about Amy and us and we feel it!

Love, Jill and Doug

Glorious God,

You are the only God and you are so good to us!  Only you have the power to make new life and to heal.  Only you have the power to whisper sweet words in Paula’s and Julie’s hearts to give their parents ‘a day off’.  Only you can bring us rest. Only you love us so much that we can feel it even if we can’t see you.  You are amazing!

Loving Lord,

Keep making Amy better, please.

Keep healing Susan’s back, please.

Keep Steve healthy, please, and thanks for healing him.

Keep Thea’s cancer markers low, please, and thanks for the end of the chemo!  Never again would be good!

Keep my own white cell count low and hemoglobin normal, please.

Remind me to  lean on you and to rest ever-so-comfortably in your arms… Remind all who read this of that, please.

Everpresent Energy,

Thank you for interesting work.  Thank you for new batteries in cars and new brakes; thank you for safety and the money to pay for repairs.  Thank you for dear friends and dear family members and dear people who smile on the street for no reason.  Thank you  for peace wherever and whenever we find it.  Lord, i love you so much!  And

I pray in Jesus’ name,

To God be the glory!

Professor Mary Luti wrote, in this morning’s StillSpeaking Devotional of the capacity for evil and violence in each of us.

So what  Prof. Luti is saying is “It could have been me.”  “There but for the Grace of God, go I.”  “We’re all more same than different.”   Some of us don’t want to remember that.  Some of us, the moral majority or the “good Christians” or the “practicing Jews” want to think we are no longer capable of such.

And then I remember Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who decided (with others) that it would be best to kill Hitler – to kill the evil one and stop the killing of the innocent ones.  Bonhoeffer’s writings are brilliant.  His theology touches my soul.  Yet he was an attempted murderer.  We’re all more same than different.

Ever-renewing Energy,

What an amazing creator you are.  To have allowed humans to be sentient; thinking, reason, deciding.  To have allowed humans to decide between evil and good; free will.  I don’t care if you made one Adam and one Eve or if we came through evolution or mutation, it’s still very cool what you’ve done.  Maybe you experimented: let me try this – oops, no Sodomites need to be wiped out!  How about this?  Nope, gonna wipe it out with a flood.  (Today in the middle west, millions of worms are being wiped  out due to the amount of  rain we’ve received in the last day!  What will the robins eat?  Maybe soggy worms…  maybe that’s what you wanted…  interesting.)  Maybe you don’t get involved at the micro-level.  Maybe you do.  Maybe you weep when even the least of your plans needs to be crossed off your endless list of possibilities.

Yet, you continue.  Maybe you just can’t help it.  Maybe what you are means you just keep creating.

Maybe you set out to make exactly me, and watch what happened from the time my parents got the right cells together to start me.  Maybe you laugh along with me when the joy can’t be contained anymore.  Maybe you clap when I go to the doctor and am taken off a medication.  That would be pretty nifty.  I would adore you anyway…  just because of what or who you are, but I think I would like you, too.  Maybe I’ll find out some day.  Maybe I won’t.  Maybe I won’t even care.  Maybe it will be like Daisy or Duey when they fall asleep in a ‘down stay’ and then wake up and don’t even remember.  That’d be ok.  Oh, wait, anything you do would be ok with me because it’s you, God.  And you’re amazing.  But this was a  fun little meditation; a little frolic and detour.  And it’s a rainy kind of morning when that kind of musing is entertaining.  To you too?  Amazing!

OK, God, let me get down to it.

All-knowing Architect,

What’s up with Amy again?  Why can’t the Lupus calm itself and let her stay out of the ICU?  So she didn’t have another seizure, that’s great!  But now, she got out of bed and fell?  And then she fell again.  And then they took her back to the ICU.  Please, please, please, be the doctors.  Be the medicine.  Be the technology.  Inspire the whole team of people caring for Amy, please.  Please?

And poor Doug and Jill and Paula and Julie!  Please hold on to them; enfold them in your arms so they feel your love and your strength.  Lord, your sense of time might be very different from ours, and this feels like such a long time!  And Amy gets a little bit better and then something else happens.  How can they not be disappointed and frustrated?  How can they not be crying “again?!?!  Seriously?!?”  And how can they continue to trust and be faithful servants through this?  How can they not be consumed with the question “WHY?”

Please, Lord, be with them.  Nourish them with the memory of Job.  Remind them that it’s not about the why, it’s about the what and the with whom.  Help them to remember to love mercy and seek justice and walk humbly with you.  Help them remember that there will be good days again.  Help them to know your peace.  Give them times of respite, maybe with prayer and meditation.  Help them to take their thinking minds off this for a little while and rest.

I bring Susan to you again, today.  I pray you’ve allowed her the medication to dull the pain from her back injury. Send your warmth and healing energy to her, please Lord.

I pray for Steve, home sick from work with the bug going around.  Give him rest and rebuild his systems. Give him a sunny attitude in the midst of this storm.

And now my mind goes back to Prof. Luti’s devotional from this morning.  It could be any of us.  We could have built pressure cooker bombs and left them near the finish line of a marathon.  Or blown up someone/something in the middle east and just happen to kill people who were walking along and weren’t the targets at all.

Some places have more violence than others.  I remember when Steve and I were talking about a honeymoon and I wanted to go to Ireland and Steve thought it was too dangerous.  And I’m reading Eat Pray Love and in Bali there was horrid violence within the last century and now it’s back to being thought of an idyllic paradise.

Lord, here’s my plan (and I know it’s meager and flawed):  I’m going to live praising you and go where I wish – even in the valley of the shadow of death.  You’ll be with me, I know that.  I’m going to live my life with as much joy as I can muster and as much kindness as I can share.

Continuous Creator,

Wherever I go, you’re there with me.  Whatever I think, you are the source.  Whatever I have, you made.  Thank you for daffodils and forsythia.  Thank you for cold and heat.  Thank you for sun and for darkness.  Thank you for rest and work.  Thank you for friends and love and community.  Thank you for all the things and people that remind me of you.  I love you so much!  And

I pray in Jesus’ name,

To God be the glory!

Continual Creator,

You renew everything in our bodies over a seven year timespan.  You designed the human body to send the proper parts of our chemistry to an area of injury.  You created our nervous systems so that pain would remind us to rest.  Amazing!

Loving Lord,

Send your healing, I beg of you, to my friend Susan.  Let her feel lifted and supported by you love and strength.  Remind her to be gentle with herself and use all available to be comforted in your embrace, for you have given us everything that cures; you have given us everything that supports; you have given us every bit of love that exists.  And these are you.  You are the love, the support, the cure, the energy that makes things new.

Miraculous Maker,

Thank you for Amy’s improvements.  Please Lord, let her come get well enough to be able to come down from the high alltitudes of Colorado and back to her ‘flat land’ and get completely back to her normal status.

Gracious God,

We are filled with gratitude.  I love you so much.

Through Jesus Christ, my Lord,

Great God Almighty,

Amy’s been seizing again.  And she’s on anti-seizure medication!  Lord, I just want to yell and scream “enough already!”  You certainly have my attention!  You would have had it anyway…  you had me at “be still…”  you didn’t even need to remind me to know that you are God.

Glorious Grandother,

I rise in darkness every morning, and the sun comes up and I can see your incredible works:  Steve softly snoring, Duey snuggled up in the crook of Steve’s knees, Daisy curled into the tightest ball a dog

Steve and Duey

Steve and Duey

can curl, a bedroom as large as my first apartment, quilts of lovely handicrafting, hot water for a shower, six medications to help me live well, coffee to wake me enough to un-dull my brain, a car to take me to work, an office large enough for 60 or so people, a warehouse with $30MM+ in electrical supplies, parts, and hardware.  You are amazing!  And just the fact that you are — with no beginning and no ending is enough for us to sing your praises.

Lord of the Light,

You know I love you.  I tell you because I know I love to hear others tell me and I suppose you do, too.  You know I give you all glory, laud and honor for this universe, and I say it again.  You know I want you to heal Amy, and I ask you again.  Please, Lord, heal my friend who is your faithful servant.  Amy taught Sunday school for so many years, she worships you, Lord.  I know bad things happen and we don’t need an explanation.  I know I need to be patient.  I feel as if I’m saying “I want patience and I want it NOW!”

And I’ll continue to lift Amy up to you in prayer, along with Doug and Jill, Paula and Julie and all who love Amy.

Amy, on a better day, holding a child

Amy, on a better day, holding a child

Be with us all.  Help us to cope.  Remind us it’s about you, not us.

And, Lord, I pray for so many others who need healing:  Marsha’s Michael, Owen’s father, Thea, Denise, so many…  Teach us how to care for ourselves better, Lord, if that will prevent any of this.

Incredible Imagineer,

Again, thank you for umbrellas in this rainy spring.  Thank you for cherry blossoms to come and daffodils.  Thank you for goldfish that live through the winter, even if they will live only to be food for herons.  Lord, I just love you so much.

I pray in the almighty name of Jesus,

To God be the glory!

As I was reading this morning’s StillSpeaking devotional, I was reminded of some reading I’ve done recently to prepare for this blog.  The point of the particular piece I recall was that love and fear are the motivations for almost everything.  The suggestion was that one try to operate from a place of love.

I believe violence is a primitive human reaction to stress.  Unfortunately, most humans learn that hurting others can be powerful.

Glorious God,

You created us.  I believe the flailing that ultimately teaches children to hit comes from the simian reflex.  Of course, the reflex helps infant primates to grab their mothers or a tree branch and keep from falling, but I sure don’t understand why humans still have the reflex.  You’ve given us such sheltered places to live; we’re not in trees anymore.  Lord, I know that I don’t need to understand.  I know it is only for me to observe and respond with your grace.  Amazing!

Lord of Love,

Only you have the power to fill me with love.  I am otherwise a mere mortal and human; I fall back into sin, fear and hatred.  You sent the perfect example to us in Jesus.  His response, almost always, was to love.  The gospels in our bible tell of only one situation in which Jesus experienced righteous indignation and threw the ‘brood of vipers’ that were money changers out of the temple.  And that was during his last week, when he may have had an inkling of what was to come.

Prince of Peace,

If fear leads to violence, and love leads to peace, remind me to choose love.  If it must be my ‘every five minute mantra’, amen.  I’ll set the tickler to ‘love leads to peace’ and snooze it for five minutes!  Let my love show to others and let them react with love.

Lord God,

I remember Amy, Owen’s father, my colleague Chuck’s friend, and many others who have asked for prayers for healing. I am very grateful that Thea is close to the end of her chemotherapy sessions!  I know only you have the  power to heal.  I am grateful for your messengers and vehicles of healing: doctors, hospitals, medical professionals, technology and medication!

As the elections prove, Francine and Diane have both become Library Trustees, and we are grateful. These women are your faithful servants, Lord, and want to do your work, remind them to pray as they head for their meetings. Fill them with your grace.

Spirit of Serenity,

Thank you for umbrellas and raincoats as I thank you for rain.  If it be your will, Lord, keep us from drought this year.  This morning’s weather reminds me of Seattle where the moisture makes even wonderful weeds.  And the birds chirping as I walked from my car (thank you) to my office (thank you) was a delight to my ears.  You love me more than I can imagine and I continue to strive to watch for that love.  I love you so much!

And I pray in the name Jesus,

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

Live Inspired:  pray continually; think boldly; dare greatly; love unconditionally; act deliberately, kindly, justly, mercifully and humbly; forgive easily; laugh frequently!

Earlier this week, my study group discussed “Evil, Suffering, and a God of Love” in the series called Living the Questions. Rev. Winnie Varghese (Rector of St. Mark’s-Church-in-the-Bowery in New York City & former Episcopal Chaplain at Columbia University) stated that it is heretical to focus on material good things that God has given to us, thinking this is because something we’ve done.  She said this belief leads us to think bad things happening has some reason in who we are or what we’ve done.

I learned this morning that Amy (who we’ve brought to God in prayer all week) has had three more seizures since yesterday afternoon.  Doctors are running tests.  All of us are on “pray without ceasing” alert!  Will you pray with me please?

Constant Creator,

You call us continually.  You long for our love.  You make mysteries and marvels.  You are more — more than our minds can imagine!  Amazing!

All glory, laud, and honor to you.  I express my adoration, my praise, my joy.  Hosanna!  You are amazing!

Lord of Light,

I wish I didn’t need to bring Amy to you again!  She loves you Lord; I know she is in a strong and loving relationship with you.  I know you are aware of what is happening and I wish it were not.  I know you are in charge and I am not, Lord.  I know you will make all things ultimately work for the good for Amy.  I know this.  But she’s having physical emergencies, Lord and I hate that.  Amy is such a good person and strives for what’s right and cares for others…  I want her to be just fine.  And that’s not in my sphere of control, Lord.  But I know it’s in your sphere of control, so I bring her to you again.

Heal Amy, Lord, I beg of you.

My carpal tunnel syndrome is strong today, Lord.  I love you and I want to keep talking, but I may have to give my thumbs and fingers a rest.  I know you understand and I know you hear me whether I type or talk out loud or talk inside my head.

Gentle, gracious Grandother,

I have come to believe that I need not focus on the bad things that happen to the good people.  This life and this world will always have bad and good.  There will be times of both and of each.  Lord, I know that I need focus only on you.  I need focus on loving, on serving, on praying.  I need not focus on understanding (even though I love figuring things out) your reasons and the reasons of bad, evil, sin in the universe.  That’s not my concern, not my sphere of control.

So I will dwell with you.  I will continue to ask you to heal my friend.  I will continue to type my side of our conversation and I will love.  I will try to bring your blessing to others.

Generous Giver,

Thank you for doctors. Thank you for hospitals. Thank you for technology. Thank you for medicine. Thank you for nourishment. Thank you for curiosity. Thank you for the will to make things better and the will to improve the condition of the world. Thank you for those who love us.  Thank you for those who support us. Thank you for those who worry about us and cry with us when we suffer.  Lord, I love you so much!

I pray in the Holy Name of Jesus,

To God be the glory!

Amazing Almighty,

This is the day Christians remember that Jesus rose from the dead.  I sure don’t know how THAT worked, but I know it came from  you.  Amazing!  This is the reason believers say you can do anything.  And relying on that level of ability gives me great comfort.  Amazing!

Loving Lord,

I bring my friend, Amy, to you again today.  You know she has a fever of 103F and hasn’t awakened since her seizure on Friday.  I know that fevers mean the body is working hard to heal something.  I know sleep is healing.  I trust you, and I ask you to continue to be the healing energy for Amy.  Be the wisdom of the medical team, I pray of thee.  Be the compassion of those taking care intensively of Amy. Be the love, as I know you are, among all members of Amy’s family.  It would be pretty cool if Amy awakens today and the bed could be empty, like the tomb.  (Just sayin’)

empty bed

Generous Grandother,

You fill our Easter baskets to overflowing with your love for us. We are grateful for all that we have.  And thank you for taking good care of Jill and Doug as they drove to Colorado. Continue, I pray of thee, to bless us to your purpose, your service.  Lord, I love you so much!

I pray in Jesus’ name,
