God,

How does a 21st century Christian make sense of you?

I know you are bigger than, more powerful than, greater than anything I can imagine. I don’t understand this “made in your image”. Does this mean you made us as you imagined us? I can’t believe you’re human, male or female. I think you transcend gender. I think there are loving father and loving mother elements in you. I just don’t know. And the part about Jesus suffering and dying for my sins.  Seriously? Or is this that Jesus’ preachings of love and his overturning the temple tables meant he had to die, that our inability to believe or follow, led him to die.

And the part about Jesus suffering and dying for my sins.  Seriously? Or is this that Jesus’ preachings of love and his overturning the temple tables meant he had to die, that our inability to believe or follow, led him to die.

I get the resurrection.  Overcoming sin and death through living again… amazing.

Anyway, thank you for my life. … more later.

Amen.

To God be the Glory!

Love always,

Melissa

This prayer is from an Eighth Century British Christian named Alcuin, reflecting that stream of Celtic Christianity that began with St. Patrick and flourished in that part of the world throughout much of the first millennium.

Give us, oh Lord we pray, firm faith, unwavering hope, a passion for justice.

hope
Pour into our hearts the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and spiritual strengths, the spirit of knowledge and true compassion and the spirit of wonder in all of your works.
miracle

Light eternal, shine in our hearts.
Power eternal, deliver us from evil.
Wisdom eternal, scatter the darkness of our ignorance. Might eternal, have mercy on us.
Grant that we may ever seek your face with all our heart and soul and strength,
And in your infinite mercy, bring us at last to the fullness of your presence where we shall behold your glory and live your promised joys.
In the name of Jesus, our body and blood, our life and our nourishment, Amen.

To God be the glory!

Oh my God,

You make time pass.  You created time, just as you made everything, seen & unseen. I pause on a very busy day of  year end bookkeeping to praise your name.  For you are the one who made the mountains and the seas.  You are the one with the plan for the universe.

Your people and your world are more important than money Lord. Amazing!

Lord of Life and Light,

Today is my husband’s birthday.  Steve’s knees give him pain because of all his college sports injuries.  It’s hard for him to breathe because of allergies and smoking.  Help him to care for himself and overcome these ailments, I pray of thee, Lord.

For my sister, Thea, and my sister-in-Christ, Susan, I pray for health and the knowledge that they are loved beyond their wildest imagination.  For my colleague, Paul, I pray for an easily treatable outcome from his procedure today.

I pray for peace in 2013.  Let your kingdom on earth, Lord.  Let me be one who acts to make this happen, Lord.

Generous Giver,

Thank you for sunshine.  Thank you for air to breathe.  Thank you for water to drink and to use for so  many things.  Thank you for food.  May I be a good steward of all these things that you have extravagantly given to me.  I am blessed.  And Lord, I am grateful.  I love you so much!

Through Jesus, my Christ & Lord,

Amen.

To God be the glory!

I spoke with a friend this morning who is devastated and furious over the tragedy last week in Newtown, CT in the US.

Incredible Imagineer,

It is only right for me to humble myself before you, the energy behind this  universe.  May I sing your praises from morning til night. When I try to describe you there aren’t words with sufficient superlative qualities.  You are more than…  older than… bigger than… deeper than…  Amazing!

Lord of Life,

I bring my friend, Kathy, to you today.  When we spoke this morning, she still was angry that you could let something like the Sandy Hook massacre occur.  She doesn’t want to worship you.  She is outraged.

And I must admit, after talking with you for all this time and asking for things and you give them to me, it scares me to think that every day I need to say “and please, no more murders.”

I’ve known for a longer time, though, that you don’t create allow only good things to happen.  I know it’s my job to face whatever horrific thing happens and find a way to make good come from it.

Help Kathy and all the people of Sandy Hook and all the rest of us to heal after last Friday’s unconscionable event.  Let us be love for one another.  Let us glimpse your love and pass it to all.

Glorious Grandother,

Thank you for giving Kathy the idea to move into action.  While she works on organizing for legislation, she has a sense of the power you have given every one of us.  Thank you for inspiring Kathy to use her gifts for good.   Thank you for inspiring her to bring your justice to our world. Let us make your kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.

You have given to us extravagantly.  I love you so much!

And I pray in Jesus’ name,

Amen.

To God be the glory!
